Orienteering for Schools in NSW
Orienteering NSW has a long history of support for the development of Orienteering as a schools sport in NSW. This support has played a major role in making NSW the overall most successful state at the annual Australian Schools Orienteering Championships.
Currently Orienteering NSW has two Schools Development Officers who can assist schools with the organisation, development and promotion of the sport (see Services for Schools).
The NSW Schools Team is also fortunate to have the backing of the Carbine Club of NSW. Each year, this group of Business and Sporting people provide financial assistance to enable the NSW Schools Team to travel interstate to compete in the Australian Schools Championships. The NSW Schools Team is therefore proud to be known as "The Carbines".
Regional and NSW Schools Orienteering Championships
Primary and Secondary schools all over NSW are preparing for their Regional Schools Orienteering Championships.
These events are open to all school students. Although in-school or club experience is an advantage, coaching is available for novices before each event. Orienteers of any standard may enter and there is no need to be a member of an orienteering club. Male and female age classes range from under 9s upwards. A variety of courses are offered that range from very easy navigation through to challenging navigation for older and more experienced orienteers. Course of distances also vary and typically range from 1.8km to 5km.
Competition is held in open parkland or mapped bushland which has recognisable tracks and features. As much as possible, these areas have clear boundaries such as fences, roads or distinctive geographical boundaries and avoid roads.
The NSW Schools Orienteering Championships follow the Regional Championships and are conducted in August annually. Promising performers at a Regional level are invited to attend at State level however self nomination is also available and all entrants are welcome to participate.
In 2010, the NSW Schools Championships will be conducted in the Southern Highlands on Sunday 29 August. Full event information and an entry form will be available mid year. Pre-entry is essential.
