Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

World Orienteering Week 2024 is next week

Our Vision

The International Orienteering Federation´s goals regarding the organisation of this annual event are as follows:
Increasing the visibility and accessibility of orienteering to young people, increasing the number of participants both in the schools’ activities, as well and in the clubs’ activities in all countries of National Federations, helping teachers to implement orienteering in a fun and educational way and to get more new countries to take part in orienteering.

One of our clubs - Southern Highlands Orienteers has featured on the WOW website last week see article link below:

WOW 2024

In May, between the 18th to 26th of May, any activity held can be organised as a World Orienteering Week event!

New Board Finance Director - Kathy Drayton

Kathy Drayton (SHOO).  Joined the Board March 2024.

Kathy is our new Finance Director, from the Southern Highlands club.

Kathy has stepped into the finance role with a background of many years as a Financial Controller.

She hopes to ensure that dealing with the Finance aspects of orienteering in NSW are as painless as possible.

Kathy is a recent participant in orienteering and can be seen in local events and the MetroLeague.

She started orienteering as a way of being in the bush, but with a backup of being found if she gets lost. So far she hasn't needed finding.

Outside of orienteering Kathy spends time travelling when she can (she is currently off to Borneo) and enjoying what life has to offer.

Late entries close tonight Sunday for ACT NOL next weekend!

Late entries close tonight for the Wildfire Sports Autumn Classics, which are National Orienteering League and ACT League events, and will be staged by Orienteering ACT next weekend.

Saturday 18 May, Wildfire Autumn Classics Day 1, Wee Jasper

National Orienteering League Round 4, Race #1 & ACT League #7

This is limestone karst terrain, unique in Australia. Although mostly open, the map is covered with intricate rock detail, which will make for a fast yet highly technical middle-distance race. The map, last used in August 2019, has been fully revised by Alex Davey. This will be a middle distance event for both National League and ACT League competitors. The existing map can be viewed here.

Sunday 19 May, Wildfire Autumn Classics Day 2, Awoonga

National Orienteering League Round 4, Race #2 & ACT League #8

This is spur/gully terrain and generally quite runnable and fast. Scattered rock features and large termite mounds cover much of the map. This will be a relay competition for National League competitors, ACT League competitors will have a middle distance. The existing map can be viewed here.

Further details for both events are available in Bulletin 1

Enter here by Sunday night.
